Reading Les Misérables, one chapter at a time

Part I, Book 3, Chapter 8

Death of a Horse

As a horse girl, 🙁 at the title of this chapter.

The four couples are at the window of the tavern, watching what’s going on outside while the Four Bros are chatting. And by “the Four Bros are chatting” I mean “Tholomyès won’t shut up,” because that man is talkative trash.

As they’re looking out the window, a horse pulling a heavy cart outside drops dead. This makes me so sad. RIP fictional horse, you poor overworked girl.

This is not relevant to Les Misérables, but I think next time I go riding and the horse starts acting like it’s a great injustice that I’m asking her to canter over a jump for the fifth time and that she is sooo overworked and sooo mistreated (she is treated exceedingly well AND I feed her fresh organic carrots with the greens attached at the end of each lesson), I’m going to tell her about this chapter and explain that her life is really quite good. That’ll totally work on a horse.

Fantine, who has made and will continue to make all sorts of terrible life decisions, is at least right in one thing: she is affected by the sight and says, “Poor horse!”

Dahlia cannot with Fantine—is there beef here—and says, “There goes Fantine feeling sorry for horses now! How can anyone be so stupid!”

Dahlia, you can get bent. Horses are great and Fantine is right for feeling sorry for a horse who died doing her job. I have a feeling this is the last time Fantine is right about anything for a long while, so I’ll give her this.

Favourite changes the subject and asks Tholomyès when the hell they’re going to get to the promised surprise. He says the surprise is here, the bros all kiss their ladies (the correct ones this time, I presume), and walk out the door, leaving the Gal Pals alone in the tavern.

Something bad is coming, but for now, let’s pour one out for the horse.
