Part II, Book 1, Chapter 1
On the Way from Nivelles
At long last, three months into this project of mine, we have finished Part I and begun Part II! What comes after the insanely dramatic events of the last book: do we immediately pick back up with Valjean, who was last seen hightailing it out of town? Do we follow Javert, who we know is hunting Valjean down? Part II is called “Cosette,” so do we perhaps circle back to check on Fantine’s daughter?
No, you fool. Why do you think anyone cares about Valjean, Javert, or Cosette? Hugo wants to tell us about a trip he took last year.
We start Part II of Les Misérables with absolutely no indication that any of this relates to Part I. Hugo talks about the scenery of the French countryside, passing an inn, coming to a historic gate, etc. It’s all very lovely in its scene-setting but also has the vibe of someone sitting you down to tell you all about their vacation.
Then comes the reveal at the end: Hugo, on his journey, has arrived at the site of the battle of Waterloo.
Victor, bud, I’m happy for you, but I want Jean Valjean back.
