Reading Les Misérables, one chapter at a time

Part I, Book 3, Chapter 6

Chapter in Which Lovers Adore

An extremely short chapter—basically just a page–where I have decided that Favourite is the best. We’re in the tavern where the couples are eating and Blachevelle, the Bro that Favourite is keeping company with, asks her hat she would do if he stopped loving her.

She goes into hyperbolic dramatics. “I’d scratch and claw you” (Favourite = also a cat???) “I’d have you arrested,” “I’d send the police after you,” etc. Blachevelle is extremely pleased with this answer.

Dahlia quietly asks Favourite, “So you really worship your Blachevelle, do you?” and Favourite immediately goes “I detest him,” and explains that she’s really in love with her neighbor. Blachevelle sucks, and she knows she’s a liar. The thing is, though, that “there are hardly any peas in the market” and “butter’s so expensive.”

So Favourite is putting up with Blachevelle and flattering his dumb male ego because girl’s gotta eat. In high school one of my friends and I called this behavior “dinnerwhoring” and I hereby crown Favourite the queen of the dinnerwhores. Favourite, you’re a real one.
