I’m reading from Christine Donougher’s 2013 translation of Hugo’s Les Misérables, which was recommended to me by Erin K. Maher. When it comes to translations of classic literature, I generally prefer more modern translations that prioritize the clarity of the author’s intention and that make tasteful modulations to accommodate the linguistic idiosyncrasies of the original, and Donougher’s edition fits the bill for me.
All quotes from the text on this blog will be from the Donougher translation.
There’s a whole write-up of the different English translations of Les Misérables here, should your taste in translations be different from mine.
